Festival of Lights

Brandenburger Tor during Festival of Lights

Festival of Lights is an annual event where most of Berlin’s famous landmarks are illuminated with a spectacular light show

Since 2005, Berlin’s famous buildings, monuments and squares have been transformed into an outdoor museum of light art for a week in October. It’s called Festival of Lights and it’s free.

And it’s not just an ordinary light show. It’s abstract films, 3D objects and animated characters projected onto monuments, skyscrapers and plazas, bringing the buildings to life.

During the week of the Festival of Lights, it attracts millions of Berliners and tourists to the city after dark.

Each year the Festival of Lights has a theme or motto, and messages with text and images related to the theme are animated over some of the most famous monuments.

With all the people on the street, it can be hard to get through and experience it all. But a good route to walk is from Alexanderplatz. You can start with the TV Tower and walk to Berliner Dom and then down Unter den Linden past Bebelplatz to the Brandenburg Gate.

If you can get through the crowds here, you can either choose to walk through Tiergarten to Siegesäule or to the skyscrapers at Potsdamerplatz.

The next Festival of Lights hasn’t been announced yet, but stay tuned to this page. As soon as the dates are official, you’ll get the news here.
