Exhibition at the Neue Nationalgalerie with works by Andy Warhol explores queerness and the naked body

From 9 June until 6 October 2024, you can experience the exhibition “Andy Warhol: Velvet Rage and Beauty” at the Neue Nationalgalerie.

The exhibition borrows its title as a tribute to the book “The Velvet Rage” by Alan Downs, which describes what it feels like to grow up and live as a gay man in a predominantly straight world.

From the early drawings to Andy Warhol’s recordings and films in the 1960s, the torso paintings of the 1970s, through his collaborations with Jean-Michel Basquiat in the 1980s, and countless photographs throughout all periods, there is a constant exploration of the male beauty.

Warhol died in 1987 at the age of just 58. He left behind an incredibly complex archive of works, but never himself experienced an open acceptance of his sexuality.

As this openness to queerness seems to be in danger again today, the exhibition at the Neue National Gallerie can be a window to better understand male sexuality and beauty.
