Südgelände is a lost place that has now been transformed into a green park. Here, you can explore nature and discover decommissioned locomotives and railroad tracks from a time that no longer exists.

Südgelände was first established as a marshalling yard in 1889 and was expanded several times until the 1930s, when it was also used as a locomotive depot. But when Anhalter Bahnhof closed in 1952, this section of the railroad also closed, and nature began to take over.

Südgelände Park first opened in 1999, and the park offers a journey through time into Berlin’s railway history. In addition to the old railroad tracks, you’ll also find historic trains and a turntable from the days when locomotives had to be turned around to travel in the opposite direction.

There is also outdoor art on display in the park, which also serves as a botanical garden for a wide variety of endangered plant species.

There are trails in the park, and there’s even a spot where you can spread out a picnic blanket and eat the lunch you brought. Wheelchairs can’t get everywhere, but in general, the park was designed with accessibility in mind.

There’s also a small fee to enter Südgelände Park, and they don’t accept credit cards, so be sure to bring cash.

The S-Bahn runs right up to the entrance. Südgelände Park is right next to the Priesterweg station in Schöneberg.
