Mauerpark

Mauerpark, Berlin.

If you want to experience the real Berlin, head to Mauerpark on Sundays. There’s a flea market, entertainment, and Berliners enjoying their day off

Mauerpark is also history. The park was originally a freight station. During the Cold War, the park was a place where East Berliners risked being shot. Today, it is a green park with playgrounds, an amphitheater and a flea market.

The station where Mauerpark is today was called Eberswalder Straße/Bernauer Straße and was built between 1872 and 1878. It was originally intended to be a passenger station but ultimately served as a freight station for the Northern Railway line.

The original Nordbahnhof

The station’s original name was Nordbahnhof, but because a new station in West Berlin had been given the same name, the freight station, located in East Berlin, was renamed.

The freight station was more or less in operation until 1985, even though it was located on the border with West Berlin. The station was located in the border area between the two walls that formed the Berlin Wall. East Berliners risked being shot in the area if they tried to escape to West Berlin.

Mauerpark is full of life

Immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was decided that the area would become what we now know as Mauerpark (literally Wall Park), and in 1992, this became a reality.

Today, the area is full of life. On weekdays, exercisers jog through the park. Berliners walk their dogs, and graffiti artists decorate the remains of the inner wall of the Berlin Wall that still exists in the park.

Flea market in Mauerpark

Every Sunday there is a flea market in part of the park. Countless stalls sell old junk, their own creations and souvenirs from Berlin.

Thousands of people fill the park. Some enjoy a beer and a Currywurst at the flea market. Others have brought their grills and are cooking on the large lawn.

DJs and musicians of all kinds also play for those in attendance in the park. And artists are happy to perform for those who have found a seat in the audience rows in the amphitheater.

All in all, both weekdays and Sundays in Mauerpark are typical Berlin. If you don’t like crowds, come and enjoy the atmosphere in the park on weekdays.

If you are looking for entertainment and to shop for unique items and clothes, come on Sunday.

Please place your deposit bottles in the holder on the trash cans so that the bottle collectors do not have to put their hands in the trash.
