Berlin has a memorial plaque honoring president Ronald Reagan’s famous 1987 speech at the Brandenburg Gate. A 2 meter statue of the president stands nearby, secretly watching over it
In 1987, U.S. President Ronald Reagan visited Berlin and delivered an iconic speech at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin. His memorable words, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall,” still resonate today. Just two years later, the Berlin Wall came down.
On the sidewalk at Straße der 17. Juni, where the president delivered his speech, a plaque honors the Cold War leader. The Ronald Reagan memorial plaque displays a relief of the president alongside his iconic words: “…tear down this wall!”

Nearby, a 2.1-meter-tall statue of the legendary US president secretly watches over the memorial plaque.
For a decade, the United States sought to gift Berlin a statue of Ronald Reagan, but every request from US officials was consistently rejected by the local government.
In 2019, the United States achieved its goal by installing a larger-than-life statue of Ronald Reagan on its own property, prominently placed atop the US Embassy next to the Brandenburg Gate.
The statue is barely visible, but if you squint, you can spot it from Ronald Reagan’s plaque.

The arrow shows where the statue is.
