On July , shortly before 10:00 p.m., a car deliberately plowed into the crowd at CSD. One person was killed and 29 were seriously injured. Just about two weeks later, a memorial to the victims was dedicated near the scene of the attack in Tiergarten.

It would otherwise have been a festive day. Christopher Street Day (CSD), as Pride is known in Germany, marched through Berlin. Hundreds of thousands of colorful and joyful people were out on the streets.

As always, the CSD culminated at the Brandenburg Gate, where there was live music and speeches from the stage. Just before 10:00 p.m., the party came to an abrupt end.

A young radicalized man plowed through Tiergarten in a rented van, heading toward the large crowd of participants at the CSD. Thirty people were mowed down. One died at the scene, while 29 others were taken to the hospital, some of whom were in critical condition.

The very next day, two spontaneous memorials were set up for the victims. One was in the Tiergarten at the scene of the crime, and the other was in front of the Brandenburg Gate, where members of the LGBTQ+ community gathered to mourn.

Two weeks later, the new memorial was inaugurated by Stefanie Remlinger, mayor of the Mitte district, and LSVD, Germany’s LGBT organization.

The memorial consists of a newly planted maple tree surrounded by a fence on which mourners can hang messages of condolence. It also features a rainbow-colored bench where people can sit in silence and remember the victims of the terrorist attack on CSD.

The tree was planted because the terrorist was stopped when he crashed into a tree. The tree was damaged, but now Tiergarten has a new tree.
