The Soviet War Memorial in Buch is not the biggest in Berlin, but it is still impressive and easy to find near Buch S-Bahn station
Just 150 meters from Buch S-Bahn station, an obelisk with the pyramid rises into the sky. It is the Soviet war memorial in Buch, honoring the Red Army soldiers who died in the Battle of Berlin in 1945.
The memorial was built based on a sketch by architect Johann Tenne in 1948 and was originally a mass grave for 200 Soviet soldiers who died in the battles around Buch.

After the larger memorial in Schönholzer Heide was completed in 1949, the soldiers were reburied there.
Today, the obelisk stands alone as a reminder to the rest of us of the heavy losses suffered by the Soviet armies during the final battles on the Eastern Front and in Berlin.
Germany is obligated to take care of Soviet war memorials as part of the 1990 reunification deal. The graffiti on the obelisk is vandalism, and the authorities must remove it and maintain the memorial properly.
