The Soviet war memorial in Alt-Hohenschönhausen has changed over the years. The original memorial is gone, and the new one is over 50 years old
The Soviet war memorial in Alt-Hohenschönhausen was renovated in the 30th year after the end of World War II. The original memorial from 1947 consisted of an obelisk, but today it is a wall with a relief depicting the Battle of Berlin.
There are also two red-painted stones, each with an inscription in Russian and German. The translation reads:
Eternal glory to the heroes of the Soviet Army

An unknown number of soldiers from the Red Army were buried at the memorial, but their graves were later moved to the Soviet memorial in Schönholzer Heide.

The memorial from 1975 used to have a large red star in front of the relief. An eternal flame blazed up from its center, but today the star is gone.
The most recent renovation was in 2021, when new paving was laid and the star was removed. The wall has also been repainted several times. The white wall is sensitive to weather conditions.

On several occasions, the Soviet war memorial has also been vandalized. In 2019, one of the Soviet soldiers on the relief lost his arm.
In 2023, the memorial was painted over with more than 20 swastikas, and the national intelligence service became involved in the case of vandalism. Swastikas are a banned symbol in Germany.

Since reunification in 1990, Germany has been obliged to maintain the Soviet war memorials. And we should also treat them with respect. After all, the memorials are the resting places of those who ultimately defeated Hitler.
